A Little History

Welcome

Father Daughter

Since the Main Street drugstore was incorporated as Lakeland Drugs in 1950 by its original owners, Dr. I.S. Giddens and C.E. Hallman, the firm has experienced a number of changes, including the space it has occupied and those that have become owners.

For a number of years, Lakeland Drug Co. occupied two buildings, including the space that is now a courtyard beside FMB and a second building where the pharmacy has been located since the firm's beginning. For many years, Lakeland Drug Company operated a sandwich bar and soda fountain.

After earning his degree in pharmacy at the University of Georgia, Wesley Johnson joined the drugstore's staff in 1963 and became a partner with Hallman and Dr. Giddens. During the early 1970s, James Scruggs became a partner at the store.

When Joe Brogdon completed his pharmacy internship at the store in 1971, graduated from UGA's School of Pharmacy, and became a partner at the store. Hallman retired from Lakeland Drug Co. in the late 1970s.

Half of the original drugstore building was sold to the Farmers and Merchants Bank in 1993. A courtyard was created in that area where a bust of Georgia Gov. E.D. Rivers of Lakeland is located along with plaques giving details relative to his administration.

Brogdon's daughter Ivey joined the drugstore's staff in 2002 after she completed her internship and received her pharmacy degree from UGA. She became a partner with her father after Johnson retired in 2005.
